Adventure Time: Finn & Jake Investigations (2015)
Adventure Time: Finn & Jake Investigations is an adventure game in which Finn and Jake act as sleuths in five "episodes," each containing a unique mystery that takes the pair all over the land of Ooo.
Adventure Time, the hit show on Cartoon Network, was a perfect fit for an adventure game: the show is filled with all sorts of quirky characters, locations, and a surprisingly deep lore. However, it initially proved to be a huge challenge: the show is incredibly unpredictable and odd, and puzzle games work best when there's a clear line of logic and predictability that players can follow. It took a great deal of creativity and iteration for me to create stories and puzzles that players can figure out while still being faithful to the weirdness of the show.
The game is split into five episodes, each consisting of three acts. Each act was created by a single designer, allowing each designer to put his own personal stamp on it. Below are a few level designs that I created for the game.
Chapter 2, Act 3
Finn and Jake discover Ice King has been kicked out of the Ice Kingdom and replaced as ruler by LSP. He moves into the Tree House with them, prompting them to travel to the Ice Kingdom to learn why LSP has taken over the Ice Kingdom and hopefully return Ice King back to power, so they can get him out of their home.
Chapter 3, Act 2
One of Magic Man's pranks has set a series of events in motion - one of which is Flame Princess being overthrown and fleeing to the Grasslands. Finn and Jake put aside their quest to find Lemongrab's missing Sound Sword in order to protect Flame Princess from three advancing platoons of Flame Guards who want to capture her.
Chapter 4, Act 3
After Starchy nearly douses the Fire Kingdom with the Wet Willie, a magical device he bought at a yard sale, Finn and Jake learn that Marceline is selling Billy's magical loot without realizing just how powerful some of these items are. She agrees to retrieve the items she sold and return them to Billy's Cave, but in order to seal the cave once and for all, Finn and Jake must retrieve Nothung, Billy's sword. Only Nothung is able to magically seal the cave to protect Billy's magical loot. The act begins with Finn and Jake returning to the Fire Kingdom to get Nothung back from Cinnamon Bun, the sword's buyer.
Bonus Chapter, Act 2
In a bonus downloadable episode, Marceline takes center stage as the protagonist. This spin-off episode takes place during the events of Chapter 4, Act 3, in which she must find three magical artifacts she sold in the ill-advised yard sale. In Act 2, she travels to the Box Kingdom, where the Amulet of Separation is said to reside. What she finds there is rather unexpected.
Primitive Levels
A look at a few of the primitive levels I built for Adventure Time: Finn & Jake Investigations. Each level consisted of multiple discrete rooms and areas that the player would move between. Separating the rooms gave our artists greater freedom when dressing up the environments.
